Call me a hypocrite or a man that goes back on his word.
I don’t care.
I’m in love with Twitter and I’m not afraid to say it.
Friends, colleagues and followers may recall a rant to the contrary last year. In said blog post, I relegated Twitter to “snail mail” status, a statement on my frustration with the site at the time.
The immaturity of the platform (read: technical glitches) really turned me off. At the time, the so-called “fail whale,” was a regular occurrence, making Twitter unusable or at least annoying.
A lot has changed over the past year.
Twitter has entered the what seems to be the the early majority phase, making it a lot more useful. I can follow, or connect to, a lot more people now because a lot more people use Twitter.
More people want to stick with Twitter because Biz Stone and Co. have fixed a lot of the site’s problems. I still find Twitter chaotic a but it is now a big part of my daily online life now.
Other reasons abound.
Twitter is a lot more readily accessible. There’s a cottage industry of applications designed to help people exchange and view messages in one view on the desktop (hello Tweetdeck), in the browser (e.g. Twitbin) or on a mobile (e.g. Twitterfon, Twitterlator).
There’s even a database of Twitter applications to help Tweeple find apps that may suit their needs.
It’s also a great networking tool. I’ve connected with people of similar interests on almost every continent. Plus, it’s a great news aggregation tool though RSS can do the trick just fine.
It’s also roped me into a couple of great parties, namely HoHoTO, an impromptu fundraiser in Toronto that took place in December.
There’s still a lot of room for improvement, like anything else in life.
I’d love to have Twitter’s SMS service restored in Canada for example. With data & SMS rates still relatively expensive, I doubt Twitter will relaunch the service anytime soon.
But there’s no going back for me. Twitter’s a part of my life. Follow me please. My handle is @krestivo. I hope to hear from you soon!
